Professional Skills Tests
Important Information for Initial Teacher Training
If you are thinking of applying for a teacher training course
which starts after 1 July 2013, you will need to take the numeracy
and literacy skills tests as part of the application process, and
ensure you have passed them both before the start of the
Successful completion of these tests will be a condition of any
offer you may receive from us but we advise that you should aim to
complete these tests before the start of the Summer Term.
These tests do not replace the GCSE
grade C or equivalent entry
When can I take the tests?
You can book your tests up to three months in advance of your
submitted application for a teacher training course. However,
when you take your tests you are required to provide proof that you
have applied for a teacher training course.
Registration and booking for the skills tests will be available
from 17 September 2012 via the Department for Education
It is important to note that the Department for Education allow
you three attempts to pass each test. If you fail your third
attempt you must then wait a minimum of two years before you can

The tests are held at a Pearson Professional Test Centres. To
locate your nearest Pearson Vue Test Centre, visit www.pearsonvue.com/ta/locate.
How much will the tests cost?
The first attempt at each subject is free of charge. Should you
need to resit charges will apply.
What support is available for me?
To help you prepare for undertaking these tests,
practice material is available on the Department for Education
website. We advise you to make good use of the interactive and
non-interactive practice materials to familiarise yourself
with the format and content before booking your tests.
We run free QTS Skills Test
support sessions at our Open Days. We also provide free
workshop sessions, and if necessary 1:1 tuition for applicants.
If you have previously required special arrangements in a test
or public examination you can request the same for the professional
skills tests for trainee teachers.
