Rachel Franklin, graduate in Philosophy & English (2008)

Studying Philosophy with English Literature at the University of Wolverhampton was undoubtedly one of the best experiences of my life. It was both challenging and rewarding, as I was always given new perspectives on both literature and the world around me that I had not thought of before, thus broadening my world view. The teaching was amazing, tutors always having time to talk through ideas in a positive way, and the atmosphere of the university in general was one of encouragement for all ability levels.

My studies benefited me in that as I want to continue on to an academic career, the joint honours degree gave me a fantastic grounding in order to follow on to complete an MA. The skills I learned during my course, such as the ability to analyse material critically and draw conclusions from them independently, are not only useful for academics but for other career choices, as employers value these skills. Studying English Literature and Philosophy together is thus a perfect combination as they both develop these skills in tandem, allowing you to put them to use in varied and practical ways, such as in the writing of essays and blogs, and in discussion groups.

The degree not only benefited me career-wise, it also helped me develop as a person. I think independent thinking and a critical perspective on the world are extremely important, as they help you to question the rhetoric of people in authority, such as that used by politicians. The University of Wolverhampton encouraged this. As such I recommend the University as a place to study Philosophy with English Literature as it not only gives you skills valued by employers, but it also helps you develop as a person."
