Ron Dutton is an internationally recognised
sculptor and medallist and is at the forefront of medal design in
Ron attained a Bachelor of Arts (Hons) in Fine
Art from the University of Durham in 1960. He held a post at
Sunderland College of Art before moving to the former Wolverhampton
Polytechnic to take up the post of Head of Sculpture, where he
remained until 1984.
Since then he has sustained a remarkable
output of medals in bronze which demonstrate originality,
inventiveness, humour and a sensibility for the British
He is a passionate advocate of his craft,
writing extensively on it. He is a founder member of the
British Art Medal Society which has contributed enormously to the
strong international profile which the art medal now enjoys. He has
introduced and led many courses in medal making in schools,
colleges and museums.
Ron’s interest in the art of the medal began
in 1970. He made several British Council research visits to Eastern
Bloc countries during the 1980’s to study the role of the medal as
an art form in communist countries.
He has exhibited his work widely including in
Hungary, Portugal, the Netherlands, Sweden and the United States.
He had a retrospective of his work at the Royal Coin Cabinet in
Stockholm in 2004, an exhibition marking the 25th
anniversary of the Nantwich Museum and another marking his own 70th
birthday in 2005. His medallic work is in many national collections
including those in Britain, Holland, France and Sweden.
He had undertaken medal commissions for
clients including the Royal Mint, the British Museum, the National
Trust, churches, commercial organisations and the University of
Wolverhampton in the form of the unique graduation bronze medal
offered to each year’s successful graduates.
