Biographical Summary Dr Paul Fallon

Paul is a late starter in terms of academia; after working in the service sector for 15 years, he completed the BA (Hons) Hospitality Management programme at the University of Salford in 1998.  He then went on to complete a PGCE (Postgraduate Certificate in Education) in 1999 and a PhD in 2006.

After four years of part-time teaching, he took up a full-time lecturing position at the University of Salford in 2002, and he joined the University of Wolverhampton as a senior lecturer in January 2010.

Paul always cites his decision to join the Tourism Principles elective class in 1996 as a defining moment of his life.

Since then, in addition to leading to a career in teaching, the decision also gave him the research bug, which has subsequently enabled him to travel to conferences around the world and see his work published in various journals and books.

He strives to pass on the baton that was handed to him back in 1996, in the hope that others with whom he comes into contact will be equally inspired by the opportunity to learn and develop.

Teaching responsibilities

Paul teaches across the Leisure Industries management disciplines:

  • Events
  • Sport
  • Hospitality
  • Tourism

Whilst his main interests relate to tourism, his academic and professional backgrounds mean that he is a generalist with a broad knowledge of the leisure area.

More recently, he has developed an interest in event management, completing ACEM’s (Australian Centre for Event Management Certificate) Executive Certificate in Event Management, carrying out research for both the organizing committee of Chester’s ‘One Earth’ Festival and Chester Civic Trust/Chester’s Heritage Open Days, and co-presenting papers at the AEME (Association for Events Management Education) Events Management Educators Forum.

He is currently an external examiner at Buckinghamshire New University.

Research Interests

Paul’s main research interests relate to consumer behaviour within the tourism sector (including visitor satisfaction, visitor perceptions, student & youth tourism, niche tourism).

However, he is also interested in a wider range of issues, for example, he has recently had joint papers presented at the Institute of Environmental Management and Assessment’s Knowledge Exchange (Manchester Conference Centre, January 2010) and the Fifth International Conference on Higher Education Marketing (University of Southampton, March 2010).

Paul has carried out editorial and review work for a number of international journals and conferences, including:

  • International Journal of Consumer Studies (Leisure and Tourism fields)
  • An Emerald Journal Worldwide Hospitality & Tourism Themes (WHATT) Special Issue on HACCP
  • Tourism Analysis; Tourism Management; the International Journal of Tourism Research
  • ACEM’s International Event Management Research Conference; and the Advances in Tourism Marketing Conference.
