Construction and Infrastructure research opportunities

The Faculty of Science and Engineering's research excellence was reflected in the most recent national Research Assessment Exercise, the RAE 2008. In a regional context the University of Wolverhampton is currently the leading university in the West Midlands for Architecture and Construction and Infrastructure research and in the top three in the region for Engineering research.

The School’s continually growing research teams are always looking for well-qualified graduates wishing to undertake research. Applications are welcomed for our MPhil and PhD programmes for full-time or part-time study.

Academic staff in the Construction and Infrastructure Department are actively engaged in researching topics which fit within four well-defined themes:

  • Construction Management
  • Surveying and Property
  • Civil Engineering
  • Built Environment Education and Training.

Staff are responsible for initiating new lines of research and for enhancing established areas of research activity. They are always willing to listen to new ideas and proposals for research topics from industry, prospective research students, professional institutions, and from governmental organisations. Current research reflects the focus of the above themes, with studies related to:

  • performance and productivity management
  • construction health and safety
  • leadership in construction
  • project management
  • flood risk management
  • delay analysis
  • construction cost management
  • construction logistics
  • rural property values
  • vegetable fibre geotextiles
  • sustainable construction materials
  • ground improvement techniques
  • weathering of historic facades
  • environmental management
  • habitat evaluation in the Black Country
  • dispute resolution.

The Department is actively involved in hosting important international conferences and works closely with employers to ensure that research findings relate specifically to their needs.

Our research student community has access to high quality laboratory and experimental facilities housed within our magnificent Technology Centre. These facilities are underpinned by excellent technical and administrative support.

We firmly believe that our research students represent a healthy future for the built environment, and wherever possible we try to augment their higher educational experience by involving them directly in the education of undergraduate students. We also seek to enhance a student’s profile through joint publications and presentations at conferences and seminars.
