Members of a Duathlon group based at Walsall Sports
Centre competed in a prestigious international Ironman event in
France.
The fifth Ironman France-Nice Triathlon, draws 2,500 competitors
from around the world and consists of three disciplines, a 3.8km
Swim, 180km Bike and a 42.195km Marathon.
Formed in 1992 and encompassing a diverse range of ages,
abilities and backgrounds, the Duathlon club was delighted to send
four of its members to the event - Neil Whitehouse, Simon Clark and
Adam Bradley, as well as Andy Bradley
Training sessions were taken by previous Ironman competitor and
group instructor Neil and comprised a mixture of technical and
fitness-based work, as well as nutritional advice. Throughout the
year a base programme is provided to establish and maintain a
foundation level of fitness, tailored to meet individual needs.
Twelve weeks prior to an event those members participating in
the competition begin a build up schedule where training becomes
more specific.
Neil said: “Many of our members initially joined to improve
personal fitness levels and then became interested in competing in
events as a natural progression. The club is used by people as a
stepping stone to a variety of different competitions, such as the
half Ironman or a half marathon, with the strong social element
being a key factor behind the groups long-term success”.
Members pictured are: James Aspinall, Lloyd Alexander, Sam Price
and Lindsey Taylor-Thornley, Neil Whitehouse, Simon Clark and Adam
Bradley.
