Rae qualified in pharmacy in 1969 and, following a period of postgraduate research in toxicology, joined the staff of the Sunderland Pharmacy School in 1972. Specialising in pharmacology and toxicology, Rae has spent many years teaching pharmacology to both pharmacy and pharmacology students, eventually heading the pharmacology section as Reader in Pharmacology. He introduced computer-assisted learning (CAL) into the curriculum, and was a founder member of the pharma-CAL-ogy consortium.
He became a member of the (Royal) Pharmaceutical Society of Great Britain in 1977 and has been involved in community pharmacy, as a locum pharmacist, ever since. In 1995, Rae moved to head the pharmacy practice team at Sunderland, becoming Reader in Pharmacy Practice and Therapeutics. He had been involved in the education of pharmacy students since first joining the staff at Sunderland and, latterly, had the responsibility for the development of all pharmacy-related undergraduate and postgraduate programmes, as Director of Pharmacy Programmes.
In 2003, Rae took charge of international development in the school and subsequently led the development and delivery of pharmacy and health-related programmes in India, Malaysia, Singapore and Hong Kong. He retains a keen interest in trans-national education and the development of working relationships with overseas academic colleagues.
His main areas of interest now centre on pharmaceutical care, patient perceptions of pharmacy and the development of trans-national education in pharmacy.
