Information, content, and subject materials

A deep understanding of subject knowledge is essential to a learner.  Materials for learning can now be accessible electronically and available through a few mouse clicks. This should be made available to students through WOLF.

Visit the Ideas for Module Content page for information about a range of approaches and types of content which would be useful. The information available to students does not have to be in written form, video, audio, podcasts, links to journals, e-books and authoritative web sites can also support learning, and the use of different media can accommodate different learning styles. Making all learning materials available and in particular in advance of face to face learning sessions will:

  • assist learners who prefer to listen rather than listen and write, or read rather than listen, understand and write. Some writers question the effectiveness of a lecture - see Graham Gibbs’ article 20 Terrible Reasons to Lecture.
  • advantage those who cannot for whatever reason make a face to face session. And research shows this has little impact on attendance (Newland, Newton, A., Pavey, J., Murray, M. & Boardman, K 2004).
  • be very useful to learners who have English as their Second Language,
  • have under developed note-taking skills – accurate note-taking is a very difficult skill
  • enable materials to be revisited and ‘owned’ by learners
  • gives students a correct and standard version
  • use PowerPoint to your advantage – best practice guide for the use of PowerPoint (PDF doc -128k - opens in a new window)

...and this is what our own students at the University of Wolverhampton say about thier own positive experience of obtaining their course materials electronically. (streaming WMV/video file - opens in a new window - 4.24min - subtitled)

WOLF and PebblePad Help and Guidance

The BLU have recently created support areas in both WOLF and PebblePad which hold comprehensive  tip sheets and movies that will take you through all functionality available in both platforms. To find the help:

Getting started with WOLF and PebblePad

These videos are aimed at new students to the University and highlight how WOLF and PebblePad can help them with learning and personal development throughout their time at the University. Each video is no more than five minutes long and can be shown to students, for example, as part of induction or welcome week.
