Peter is an award-winning lecturer, with a passion for teaching and a flair for inspiring and motivating students.
Prior to entering academia Peter gained experience in the public, private and voluntary sectors within tourism, hospitality and events management in a range of roles that included senior management roles with The National Trust and Derby University as Tourism projects manager overseeing a range of EU funded business support projects.
Peter has also worked as a freelance Tourism and Events Consultant working with a number of high profile clients, alongside an IT Recycling business which he developed ‘by accident!’.
Peter is passionate about the application of theory to practice, and especially enjoys opportunities to work closely with businesses to provide advice and expertise, to develop projects and to ensure his teaching is underpinned by contemporary knowledge of the tourism, events and hospitality sectors.
Peter teaches across the Leisure Industries disciplines: Events, Sport, Hospitality, Travel and Tourism, specialising in Operational Management, Employability Skills and Event Management, all areas covered in his textbooks.
Peter also coordinates the Leisure Industries Dissertation and designs and delivers workshops to support students through the dissertation process – leading in some cases to the publication of student research.
Peter is a Principal Lecturer and Head of Department for Leisure Industries and The Arena Theatre.
Peter is actively involved in a wide range of research projects around events management, tourism management and pedagogy, bringing these subjects together through his specific interests in the use of Google Earth within teaching and practice, Community Tourism Development and Sociology within Tourism and Events Management.
