Construct a new future

 

The Foundation Degree in Construction is aimed at construction workers and allows them to combine work with their studies.

 

The School of Engineering and the Built Environment has developed the two-year, part-time degree to provide skills in areas such as construction technology, health and safety and the impact of construction on the environment. Starting in February, the degree is offered by the University in partnership with Stourbridge College and City of Wolverhampton College and could lead to future roles such as construction manager, site agent, building control officer or building surveyor.

 

Professor David Proverbs, Head of the Construction Department at the University, said: “The new Foundation Degree in Construction provides the opportunity for experienced construction workers, perhaps with no formal qualifications, to gain a vocational degree that recognises and values their experience.

 

“With work-based learning being a major feature, this new type of degree course develops the knowledge and skills needed by employers. The course is extremely flexible and can be tailored to meet the needs of students and employers and we are delighted to be able to offer the first intake in February.”

 

The flexible course is designed to be integrated into the workplace and is offered as a day release mode of study.

The Foundation Degree in Construction has been developed with significant input from construction employers and allows students to use their existing work skills and knowledge to contribute to their study. If the company they work for is eligible, the student may be able to financial help from the West Midlands Centre for Construction Excellence.

 

Students could also consider topping up the qualification in one year to a full BSc (Hons) Degree at the University of Wolverhampton, and may lead to membership of key professional bodies such as CIOB, ICE and RICS.
