Learning and Teaching for Social Diversity and Difference

The Learning to Teach Inclusively project continues to build on the work of Learning and Teaching for Social Diversity and Difference.

This research project explored ways of enhancing the learning and teaching environment to improve the academic engagement and participation of a diverse range of students, particularly in relation to differences in class and academic background, age, gender and ethnicity.

Aims and Objectives

1. To explore the relationships between university students' and teachers' conceptions of:
  • themselves and each other on their respective roles
  • knowledge and knowing
  • learning and teaching
2. To explore the differences and similarities between student and teacher conceptions from both pre- and post- 1992 universities

Significance

Expected outcomes from this research include the development of:
  • Strategies for improving the academic engagement and participation of all students
  • Inclusive learning environments
  • Increased knowledge and research capacity in this area

Learning and Teaching for Social Diversity and Difference was one of seven widening participation projects funded by the Economic and Social Research Council's (ESRC) Teaching and Learning Research Programme (TLRP)
